The contest was awarded to Kollvik Recycling s.l. by Aena and the plant was destined to treat organic waste produced at the airport and from the cafeterias, restaurants, fast-food restaurants and the staff canteen, apart from the sludge of the terminal and some gardening waste.

The plant recollects waste from selective recollection and has been working since then avoiding contaminating greenhouse gases emissions with a volume close to 1000 tCO2e.

Should we extrapolate this initiative to the 46 existing airports in our country, giving service to almost 200 million passengers per year, Aena could have stopped emitting more than 60m³ tCO2e over these 4 years just by this concept.

Only at 3 airports

Nowadays, only two airports at the Basque Country, and another one in South Tenerife count with this type of installation, which avoid apart from the undesirable emissions, the corresponding traffic of outer vehicles through restricted areas.

The rest of the airports continue sending organic wastes to nearby plants or to waste disposal sites.

We would like to congratulate the management team, headed by Mr Eduardo Gómez, chief of maintenance of the airport, who promoted this initiative.

Alfonso Alonso, the then-mayor, highlighted the effort carried out by the city council of Vitoria in order to achieve five composting machines of the Spanish firm Kollvik Recycling SL with a view to compost the organic waste of the shopping mall, in an innovative initiative on the sector.

The plant has been working since then with the three installed machines, what has avoided the emission of almost 2,000 tCO2e to the atmosphere in Vitoria. Should we extrapolate this initiative to all the shopping malls exiting in our country, Spain would have stopped emitting more than 2million tCO2e over the last ten years just by this concept.

Barely at 3% of shopping malls.

Currently, barely a 3% of the shopping malls have followed the guidelines set by “El Boulevard” shopping mall, as most of them keep sending their organic wastes to waste disposal sites.

We would like to congratulate the management team, headed by Mr Pablo Vivancos, who promoted this initiative.

· The event took place on the last 27th April, with the presence of  the Minister for Environment of Malta, Mr. Leo Brincat.

The plant has an estimated capacity of 2 tons per day and includes the last technical advances introduced on the Biocomp rotational composters.

Composters will treat fruit and vegetables scraps from the central market located nearby and from the organic fraction of nearby inhabitants.

Kollvik has also provided prune shredding equipment and water vapour emissions and odour control treatment systems.

EU Funding

This project funded by the EU was awarded to Kollvik Recycling SL in a public contest and involves a substantial improvement for these types of recycling centres (Clean Points) as well as a great saving for the waste management company of the country.
We estimate that just this installation will avoid the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere of almost 3.000 tCO2e every year.
Should we extrapolate this initiative all the recycling centres existing in our country, giving service to almost 500,000 people, this Mediterranean archipelago would stop emitting more than 50,000 tCO2e per year.

Online platform The Organic Stream offers this course about organic wastes management.

Kollvik sponsors lessons 0 and 6 of the course about organic waste management offered by The Organic Stream, an international online platform based in Sweden, which offers specific training about the treatment of organic waste in order to influence local governments, agriculture and companies with a view to boost the recycling of organic waste.

The agreement reached between Kollvik and The Organic Stream, result of the combination of our philosophy and the objectives of this non-profit company, has encouraged us to sponsor this interesting training activity aimed to professionals and managers of recycling all around the world.

The Lycée de Navarre, school centre located in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (France), has been distinguished with the “Label Établissement BIO Engagé” as it has been considered a “Bio-committed” establishment by the regional government.

The president of the General Council of Aquitaine, Alain Rousset, and Philippe Lasalle Saint Jean, president of the Interprofessional Association giving service to bio operators of the region, Arbio Aquitaine have approached the school centre to deliver the hallmark.

The region of Aquitaine has participated on the investment for the installation of Kollvik composting machine at the Lycée, whose Agenda 21 includes multiple activities targeted to promote the sustainable development on the day-to-day operations of the school centre.

The mechanic composter installed by Kollvik at the Lycée de Navarre allows the transformation of food scraps of 1,500 daily meals into vegetal compost used on the vegetable gardens grown by students of the school centre.
